Looking for L1 rocket opinions - IndianaSteve - 01-03-2018

Good afternoon ladies and gents, as the title states I am looking into picking out my first high power rocket! I will hopefully be trying for my L1 cert as soon as the Indiana weather gives us a break!!
I have done some research and found what I believe the ideal rocket is for my cert flight, but I want some opinions from people that have been there before.
I am looking for a 38mm engine rocket that is built strong( to give me the best chance of a clean flight for my cert) and although I wish I could say budget isn’t a consideration, it happens to be 😁 so I need to keep the kit under $150
So if you had to do it all over again, what would you choose and why please.
Thanks for any help for the new guy on the block 😎

Do you have recovery stuff already in hand, or are harness and chutes part of the $150?  Is motor part of the $150?

The $150 will be just for the kit portion of the L1 attempt only.

I am always a proponent of fiberglass kits, this is a good one. only $130 and it is ready for Dual Deploy when you are.

I Bet AMW can even help you out with a Level one cert motor special just them 603-566-2904

To be honest I hadn’t even considered fiberglass kits. I will have to check that out. Thanks for the suggestion.

once you start building fiberglass HP rockets, unless you are a serious builder you wont go back....

What's your waiver look like? Scorpion XL w/ tailcone & retainer sounds pretty sweet.

They have a 10k foot waiver, but as I don’t have any tracking device, or room in the budget to purchase any at the present moment, I’m not looking to join the mile high club at the moment 😁

There is a LOT to be said for low and slow!

For combined quality and low price, its hard to beat the Wildman Junior series. All rockets are fiberglass, with a 38 mm MM, dual deployment, and most parts needed to complete construction sans parachute. The price is about $126 each or less. Most either have build threads on line or written instructions. You also can't beat Tim's availability to answer build questions over the phone. Check their new website and online reviews.
Alternatives to consider are the AMW kits and formally Rocketry Warehouse kits (now sold by Mad Cow Rocketry). I agree that the above mentioned CTI cert sale of a free case for a cert 1 attempts is a great deal. Its acquired through your local club's CTI sales associate.

Good Luck!
